Manual
of the Automatic Pistol Caliber .45 Model of 1911 (War Plans Division, May 1918,
Document No. 801) - This stapled 36 page manual appears to be a
hybrid crossover between a field manual and technical manual. I honestly do not
know of any earlier manuals on the 1911 pistol other then this one. The manual
consists of three major parts plus appropriate picture plates. Part 1 consists
of pistol operation, disassembly, assembly, ballistics, and ammunition. Part II
concerns pistol drill. Finally, Part III teaches one the rules of safety,
shooting positions, accuracy, how to aim, etc. Of interest, I recently saw an
original book of this manual for sale on the Internet for well over $100.00.
This is a stapled pamphlet consisting of 36 pages. The paper is 24# bright white
(102+).

FM 23-45 Basic Field Manual, Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45 M1911 And M1911A1, Prepared Under The Direction Of The Chief Of Cavalry - This manual is dated 30 April 1940. I am sure it is one of the last manuals ever envisioned where the troops would ride horses into battle! The manual is actually pretty thorough in the following areas: mechanical training, loading and firing mounted and unmounted (they're talking horses here), firing at field targets, mechanical training, range practices, assembly and disassembly, etc. This manual is 96 pages long and comes in 5.5" X 8.5" in size. There are several illustrations done on horseback. Amazingly, the course for horseback shooting is laid out very thoroughly! The paper is 24# bright white (102+) with the book being plastic wire bound. This book can be placed on the shelf in your workshop for easy reference. The book also opens and lays flat, so you can work on your rifle and observe your manual simultaneously. Obviously, this manual is for those with a historical perspective on shooting in the U.S. Army.

Illustrations clearly show the differences between the National Match and standard M1911A1 pistol. The book covers special parts, modified parts, standard parts, inspection parameters and clearances, test firing of the pistol, final inspection, and packaging. Every individual component is shown, clearly delineating dimensions and tolerances. The cover and back of the manual are 19mil polypropylene - size is 8-1/2" X 11" and is 102 pages in length. It's not the cheap paper you get at a gun show with cardstock stapled covers. I have seen this manual occasionally for sale at gun shows and on the Internet for around $15.00. My reconstruction of the manual is clear, uses better and thicker paper, has removed the inking errors and see-through page effects, has permanently lasting covers that won't tear, and is priced similarly or less.

Item Name: Ordnance Maintenance, Pistols and Revolvers, November 9, 1942 (TM 9-1295) Price: $15.00 Pistol, Automatic, Caliber .45, M1911A1, 1917 through August 1945 - This 40 page narrative describes the history of the 1911 series pistol from World War I through the end of World War II. Topics discussed include development of the pistol, standardization (an important and tough issue for this pistol initially), and production requirements vice those actual achieved. At the beginning of World War II many within the Ordnance Corps and US Army believed the "pistol" was obsolete. Rather amazingly, nearly 2 million M1911A1 pistols were manufactured during World War II - the roll that this pistol played is absolutely astounding! The book itself is a great read. Topics discussed cover even how the production materials, tools, fixtures, testing, and finish changed and were improved upon at Springfield Armory during peacetime in preparation for war. Problems in integrating interchangeable parts manufactured at different production facilities are discussed. The book itself can be placed on the shelf in your workshop for easy reference. "Click" HERE to see Appendix "D". This manual looks very professional and is packed with great information! It's not the cheap paper you get at a gun show with cardstock stapled covers.
